Favorite Images from 2023: #12 Eons

As I've done for several years I like to look back on the previous year's work and share my 12 "best" images - although the word best is subjective. So, let's say that these are my 12 favorite images of 2023. I'll be sharing them one at a time.

Eons

In summer 2023 we visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park for the first time. I was blown away by sheer faces of the canyon - two million years in the making. If this canyon could share what it has "seen" over those years, it might tell us about mammoths and mastodons, American lions, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, giant ground sloths, and short faced bears. Along some of the canyon walls (dating from the Precambrian period) one can see lighter veins of rock (pegmatite) cutting through darker gneiss and schist. The geology in the canyon is fascinating, though the steep drops - some of which are near vertical and over 2000 feet in height - are alarming! Do heights bother you?
