Favorite Images from 2023: #8 Canyon Cathedral

As I've done for several years I like to look back on the previous year's work and share my 12 "best" images - although the word best is subjective. So, let's say that these are my 12 favorite images of 2023. I'll be sharing them one at a time.

Canyon Cathedral

Gut wrenching. That's how I'd describe some of the views at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I'm referring in particular to the 2000+ foot sheer drops. While hiking along the rim one evening we stopped to take in the view while the sun set and through clouds and geography cast light selectively on the canyon wall. This outcrop was the last feature to let go of the receding sunlight, and while it remained lit it caught my eye. Given the surrounding terrain I imagined that no person could easily ever get to this small area. With the sunlight illuminating a few pines and junipers growing next to rock spires, the feeling I got was that this was the canyon's hallowed ground - the citadel from which one could watch the river pass by far below. Or, perhaps it is nature's cathedral built by the river over millions of years.
